My son who is twelve has had type1 for six years. Yesterday at school he started to feel low and tested BG was 48 he ate glucose tabs tested 20 mins later only 54. ate more glucose and did not change from 54 it had been over an hour. I was already on my way to go get him. When I got there he was not coherent could not talk he was shaking violently and vomiting. I had to call for an ambulance. Ended up having a fever of 101 and told it was a viral infection. Heo had no insulin from 200pm (he has the pump we turned it off) At th ER they gave him a huge dose of straight sugar it shot him up into 250 then an hour later with no insulin he dropped back down to 120. They told me this is normal. But he had had no insulin. So My question is has anybody ever had there Bg dropp from being sick. I only seen him spike. The Endo nurse told me she never heard of it dropping either?? Confused Mom

I do not know alot about how diabetes works with 12 year olds. I am 21 and have been diabetic since I was 15. I know that if I use straight sugar to handle a low, I spike and then drop. I always try to eat something with a mix of carb, fat and protein. I hope that your son has leveled out and now is back to normal. Best of luck. - J
