Hi everyone. I'm a newly diagonsed diabetic. I take a oral medication along with insulin on a sliding scale. That's about three shots a day. I'm still struggling with high numbers! The problem with the sliding scale is its not preventing the highs. Its only treating after the numbers are already high. What is your opnion on the sliding scale? It seems to me the highs shold be prevented before they happen not after? I know there's a lot of different views on this. I was curious what you all thought......thanks

Personally I use carb counting as it is to keep our sugar in range while it boluses for the food we eat thus giving less highs. I didn't see where you mentioned anything about a long acting insulin like say lantus or levimir. both are considered basals and if we didn't eat anything it would keep us normal ( Lantus and levimir are used if you do not use a pump ). then fast acting like humalog or novalog would be used to cover carbs you eat. I recommend you discuss your concerns with you endo and see if they are willing to change your dosing but since you are still new to all of this they may just be starting you off on this to see how your body responds to the insulin before they go and slam carb counting in your face because it takes a bit of work to get it right.

I am on a pump and so I am hooked up 24/7 to fast acting humalog

Thanks for your reply. Yes I'm only on humulin r right now for my insulin. Hopefully in time I'll get this all squared away:) it has only been a month so that's not long but gosh I feel so much better on the insulin! Its really made me feel more energetic! It all just takes time doesn't it?

It does take time but if the current regimen you are on is not working and has not been working for some time then it is def. time to see your ENDO about changing it and seeing if something esle will work for you instead because no one should just have to put up with high blood sugars I would really call your D team this week and see about getting some changes on your insulin dosing.
