First time poster here . . . I haven't been a traditional college student for many years, but I'm going to post it in this subforum because it fits. How does one hang out in a bar to try and meet people despite having to eat at some of the times when singles events are going on? I'm on a 2 shot a day regimen with NPH and regular and have to eat to the insulin I take. I've thought about having more flexible regimens, ie using a pump, but I can't afford it, or using lantus and a humalog type insulin - I'm very skinny and have problems with scar tissue, so my body can't support a lot of injections every day. Doing my current regimen, I have an A1c of about 5.2. I've had a constant battle to try and fit in when I have to eat or NOT drink alongside others. I never went out much while I was a college student just because I was so focused on my work. Now I'm trying to live a little, but my pancreas' inability to function correctly is getting in the way. It might just be my perception, but I don't know how to snack in the middle of things, and go sober in the middle of people who would look at you askew for doing such things. I've thought about taking less insulin and removing some eating times to cope, but its hard to change out of a routine that works A1c-wise. I'm also wondering how other diabetics who don't drink handle situations like this. Thanks. | |

Great post by the way. The issues around drinking and the social area that it falls into. Well it's your choice to drink or not, many people I know don't drink.
They get by with "fake drinks" like a diet coke with lime or club soda (watch out for the carbs though)
When someone asks why one of my friends that doens't drink why he isn't he says that he lost a good friend to a drunk driver and told himself we wouldn't drink alcohol after that. That usually does justice to not drinking.
You can even say your a diabetic and can't drink.
When I was in the college bar scene I used to have a pre-filled shot with fast acting insulin, and do insulin according to what I ate and what my BG was while I was out. You can easily go to the bathroom to do your injection and test your BG.
It's really all about being open about who you are. The more you hide it, the more it ends up bothering you sometimes. That's been my expereince. But I am a bit outgoing some would say. Everyone is different.
I hope it helps my friend,
Take Care
