For my request for a cgms, they ask my doctor (who I have been seeing for about 10 years) how many times I have been hospitalized, including an ER visit, for diabetes or diabetes related complicaitons.  I have 13 I remember, so there might be more, but only 2 in the last 10 years.  So, do I tell him to put 13, or is there a way you can find out?  It might be better if there are more.  Why do they need that info?  Does it make a difference?  My insurance company doesn't cover them, anyway.

Just curious.

Interesting....  I would tell him 2 in 10 years.  I don't think he would go and find out how many times you did go, and it's not like you are lying.

The CGMs companies try to get as much infromation that they can ues to help and try to get you coverage.  Just because your insurance company doesn't cover the CGMs now,  that doesn't mean you can't appeal and have your Doctor write a letter and state that it is a medical necessity.  I have seen many CGMs devices get covered that way.

Because if you are ever polled about weather the CGMS system helped you, and you did improve the number of hypoglycemic events (ergo diabetic hospital visits) then they can use combined data to show others (potential customers, doctors, etc.....) that may need "Proof" the system is worth the cost and effort. I have never been hospitalized for diabetus (knock on wood) so my Endo put 0. I dont think it makes a huge difference what the number is to anybody but the manufacturer. As long as the doc puts in a letter of medical necessity, then the insurance has everything they need to justify the cost. The letter of necessity acts as a "3rd person perspective" if the insurance company needs to justify the payment ammount. I hope that sheds some better light on the issue.

I am what some would call a success story of the sorts with my CGMS I got approval the next week and with no issues. with me I was always hospitalized with lows because of my ever demanding lifestyle and two jobs medic and firefighter and it has really SAVED my life. I have no and I mean no hypo awareness what so ever I could walk with a bg of 25 with no symptoms what so ever. but at 20 I just fall asleep and don't wake up. the ER learned that one the hard way I fell asleep because I was up for a whole 24 hrs with kidney stone and they just doped me right up with pain meds galore and that is why they thought I was out like a light but when they came in to check on the pain I didn't wake BG check with meter low with blood work 16mg/dl after waking up to what seemed like every ER staff member known there I was like hey you woke me up why I am fine pain is good now they laughed and told me the issue and I told them " I told you so " ER doc said I know you did ( I have been taking pt's to his ER for yrs!! ) but now it is way better I start to feel symptoms at 35-40mg/dl and that is great!!
