I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes 3 weeks ago.

Weeks before being diagnosed, I remember feeling really tired, really weird, overwhelmingly thirsty.. and I was going blind. Over all, I felt something was really wrong with me.

I decided to see my doctor. I explained to her all of my symptoms. The lab took a blood test.. and later that night, at 3 in the morning, my doctor called me. Her voice was shaky and I could tell she was scared and worried. She asked me if I was feeling alright. I told her I was fine..  But I knew right away she had bad news. I didn't like the worried sound in her voice.. especially because doctors never call you with good news.

She told me to get dressed and go to the ER because the lab had just finished calling her informing her of my blood results. Turns out my sugar lever was over 800.

The nurse at the ER took 8 tubes of blood samples.. and immediately gave me insulin through an IV. Thats when I knew.

At that point, I panicked.. I didn't know much about diabetes but I was extremely scared. I thought about being sick for the rest of my life and how it was going to effect me when I was older. I wondered, why me and what I had done wrong. Was I not eating right? Was it my lack of exercise? I just wished it would miraculously go away.

They kept me at the hospital for 4 days.. until they finally released me. =) I was so happy to be home. My family and friends were so wonderful They were a big part of helping me cope. But I owe a lot to 1happydiabetic.com.. the oh so happy atmosphere.. all the informational videos and the support. =)

And Im happy to say that after 10 years of wearing glasses.. I finally got my 20/20 vision back! =) Who knew it was my glucose levels all along???

Hey there! Welcome to the awesome diabetes club! I'm glad you have a good attitude about all this!!!!! I'm 17 and I got my diagnosis 6 months ago, and I can honestly say that diabetes has helped me as a person to appreciate what I have and be a happier person. I got a 740 blood sugar when I went in and now I have a 6.4 a1c! One thing that I might warn you about, don't throw your glasses away juuuust yet. I had glasses for 4 years and I got 20-20 for about 2 weeks after diabetes then I was back to the good ole' stage where I could hold my glasses a certain way to make me look smarter than I really am ;) . Anyways, keep up the awesome work and give your family and friends a hug for me! Sometimes diabetes is harder for them as it is for us. You rock!

Zoraida,

Thank you so much for the kinds words.  It made my day.  And thanks for sharing your story.

Wow, only 3 weeks ago.  I am sorry to hear your Diagnosis.  I think we all had the same thoughts as you when we heard the news about our own diagnosis.

Clark welcomed you to the club, but better is that you have some great support here with all things.  Diabetes can be overwhelming with trying to research and figure this beast out.  Not to mention the physically and mental games diabetes can throw at you.

If you have any questions, or don't understand something.  Please feel free to ask here.  We have many members what would to share what they know, and how they over came the challenges with managing diabetes.

I am so happy to have placed some positive atmosphere around diabetes.  We all know how hard it is, this is place where we don't give up and help as best we can.

I wish you the best of luck on your new journey.  Clark mentioned in his response that it has helped him "appreciate" his self more and his surrounds.  I could not agree with him more.  You will know yourself much better inside and out.   That is something positive us people with diabetes share.

Thanks Again,

Bill
