I was just sent the newest newsletter on the progress of the trials. Some great news, Check out the link below.
Smmer/Fall 2009
The Faustman Lab at Massachusetts General Hospital, run by Denise L.Faustman, MD, PhD, is moving rapidly through the clinical trial challenge to test and possibly establish a vaccine using a generic drug, Bacillus Calmette-Guérin(BCG) to reverse type 1 diabetes. The experiments have moved from mice to a clinical trial in humans, and the testing has passed every research milestone ahead of schedule — an astonishing feat for any clinical research project.

I like the fact that it's already a well-known drug and it's cheap and effective to make.

Yeah when was the last time you heard of a generic drug involved in any trial.

Here is my response. Case Report Renal Complications of Intravesical Bacillus Calmette-Guérin Therapy Anne Modestoa, Luc Martyb, Jean-Marie Succ, Dieter Kleinknechtd, Jean-François de Frémonte, Thierry Marsepoilf, Pierre Veyssierg
We report 3 patients who developed signs of systemic infection and renal insufficiency after intravesical bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) instillations for a bladder cancer. Renal biopsy showed tubulo-interstitial nephritis with or without epithelioid granulomas in 2 cases, and mesangial glomerulonephritis in the last case. All patients had granulomatous hepatitis in association. It seems that hematogenous dissemination via a traumatic instillation of BCG and/or an immune-complex mechanism may have contributed to the renal damage, which was only partially reversible in 2 patients. We report 3 patients who developed signs of systemic infection and renal insufficiency after intravesical bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) instillations for a bladder cancer. I tried to look up what study this article came from. What I found "on the internet" regarding this issue seems to reports of the problem and not trial based.
I did find one trial that had 1287 patients and renal abscesses was present in 0.1%. One tenth of one percent. Not positve if this is the relm.
Not sure if the patient type has anything to be concerned about as well. Cancer patients some above the age of 70 had these renal issues.
Japan did a study of 172 patients and concluded no renal problems. Another small study I found had the same results. They did however suggest doses above 80mg might need greater attention to monitor for adverse events.
This is something to be watched for. Thank you for posting this information. I did not know about these adverse events.

What are the symptoms for ovarian cancer.? I read somewhere that the problem with ovarian canceris that many of the symptoms are easily confused with digestivedisorders and bladder problems, so the cancer goes unrecognized until it’s advanced. http://www.caring.com/questions/faq-what-are-the-signs-and-symptoms-of-ovarian-cancer
