Just wondering if you guys consider it rude when someone asks what your A1C is? I recently asked another parent of a type1 what her childs last A1C was. She gladly told me, but afterwards I was wondering if that was something that might offend people to be asked.

As a diabetic, I personally don't think it's something rude to ask... I would gladly give out that info. So, from a parent to a parent I don't think it is, I think it would be like a parent asking another how are their kids grades our something like that (couldn't think of a better anology, but i think you get my point

I agree with Kenny. The A1C question (which this site didn't put in as a member question) is interesting. Some people don't have a problem with answering it, but I think it is like asking someone how much money they make.
Some people would love to tell you about it and then some. While others think it is not a question to ask.
So I think you have to know someone before asking that question. Some people are embarassed or their number or don't even know. I wouldn't want someone to feel that way if I didn't know them.
Great qustion, I would like to see how other people feel about it as well.

I don't mind if someone asks me but I can see how someone else might feel different. I try to ask "do you mind if I ask you what your a1c is?" to give the person an out if they feel like not answering. Once I had a client scream at me when I asked him what the doc said his a1c was. That taught me to ask in a different way, whether it be a client of mine or another diabetic I meet.

Yeah, I don't know... it's kind of like asking how much someone weighs. It's a personal question. And it opens up the floor for judgement. As we all know, our A1cs don't necessarily convey how hard we try to be "good" diabetics. Some of us have it more under control than others, but that doesn't mean that one tries harder than the other.
It's a bit personal. | |

No matter what you ask another person; it should always be asked diplomatically. Personally I don't mind, however it is a personal question and it depends on how a person feels about their own situation. Suzanne, I don't think the person should have yelled at you. I mean they could have said, "I don't give out that kind of information." and said it politely. :(I think that was rude on their part, personally.:( Just my two cents worth.

I have met a lot of diabetics through diabetes camp. Whenever we are together we always start exchanging A1C's. It's kinda funny. Maybe it's because we are all friends and know each other well. But noone is offended, and I wouldn't be offended if anyone asked me.

I guess it would depend on what the answer was... When I was young and binging on chocolate, my #'s were always terrible and I didn't want to discuss it with anyone for fear of feeling looked down upon. I think when a person is proud of an accomplishment, they want to yell it to the world... When not so proud, they want to keep it to themselves.

Yeah. I like to call it the diabetic mirror. In either case it's just looking out for your own interest. It can become a big pride issue and I even struggle with it sometimes. But then again my family is so cool it's hard to stare at myself for too long
