After about 6 months of fighting with our insurance company... Charleigh was approved for her CGM today... :)  So excited.  Persistency paid off... Just in time for school.

People in Ontario who love their CGMS (the only one available in Canada is the Paradigm Real Time [Medtronic]  or the stand alone The Guardian) should write a letter to the Canadian Diabetes Association, the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care, their Mamber of Provincial Parliament to tell tham that funding for pumps, CGMS, and supplies have to be funded to keep people in Ontario with diabetes healthy.

People in other Canadian provinces should be pushing their political parties and their MPs and MPPs or MLAs to fund preventative measures so that healthcare costs are reduced, life insurance pay outs and disabilitiy pay outs  are eliminated and extended health benefits are eliminated or reduced.  There are studies out now that show that serious complications are reduced 50% if people keep their blood glucose levels under control (6 % A1C).

You can also tell your CDE, your endocrinologist, your GP, your eye doctor, your ER physician, et al. that we need the technology to replace the function of our pancreas.  Goodwill alone just won't cut it.

What do you think, gentle reader, if the Queen's School of Nursing phones and we are busy building our garage, should I invite the students to see how a type 1 diabetic lives on a pump and sensor or should I let the opportunity pass because I am just too busy?

We love our Paradigm RealTime + CGMS .  What is it they used to say on Insulin pumpers list? " Any pump is better than no pump?"  I'd say, "Any CGMS is better than no CGMS.

Just watched the video on the Dexcom 7.  I didn't know what it was. I thought it was a new pump.  Very interesting but I'm just getting used to my OmniPod so I'm not ready for another device.  Good luck with it, seems like there's a lot more control of the BG levels.  Maybe in a year or so I'll look into it more.

FYI.. Just thought I'd add this note. Hope this helps someone..

When applying for CGM coverage for the first time make sure you show atleast three lows in a week (below 50).

They are required to accept a hand written log too *wink* . I wish I had known this sooner. My battle would have been a lot shorter.

Weird, I get my pump supplies through Edge Park Medical.  They called me a few months back and said my insurance company would approve a CGM if I was interested.  I never asked for one or even inquired about one.  4 days later I was on the Dexcom.  I wonder why some insurance companies take forever to fight with and some offer them without a patient even asking for one?
