I just added in this forum topic because I think it is an important one.  Other sites stay away from this topic but we all have them.  Please feel free to express yourself.  Hopefully we can give your the support you need.  Maybe we have been in the same boat before and can help you through.

Today for me actually has been pretty good...  Only one low... my fault getting all excited over the phone and not eating, but I was aware and treated.  I let people know when I am low and talking with them "sometimes"  - makes me feel better.  I think I gain some respect from those people and not hiding from my lows I have.

Okay, I have to be honest here, I tend to keep my lows to myself, sometimes to the point where I may need to speak up.. I don't know the reason for this, maybe embarrassment, not quite sure.

I recently cut back my carb intake by almost 50% ( I was eating a lot of carbs) Because I was in a vicious cycle.  I would be eating a lot, bolusing a lot and constantly getting lows.  I was getting on avg 2 or 3 lows a day.

Since cutting back I have deffinitly gotten less lows, but still 1 a day or every other, but I have been working on that with my endo, and checking basal rates and whatnot.  So hopefully I can continue being a "better" diabetic.

So, yeah I need to speak up more about my lows, and also try to have less of them!

I will leave you with this funny but also not funny story:

The first "date" I had with my wife I went over her house to watch a movie.  About 25 minutes into the movie I felt low.  I never talked about diabetes with her yet (she had known I had it, from a friend).  So me not wanting to talk about diabetes, or my low blood sugar I swiftly asked for a drink.  She then told me she had diet coke or water.  GREAT, so now stupid me still being stupid said uh you know what, I'm kinda hungry too.  So she said well we don't have much, my mom has been on a LOW CARB DIET!!!!!!  So now I'm freaking out (also probably 50 by now).  I finally caved and explained that I had a low blood sugar and needed anything with sugar.  We finally found some fudge pops and then spent the next 2 hours talking about my diabetes.

I am not sure why I have spent most of my diabtes life keeping it secret?  I have deffinitly gotten better with it now...........

Kenny,

I read your story to my wife she got a chuckle.  Diet Coke or Water?  I'll take the one with sugar in it... oh wait...  I bet you must have been going through loops to figure out what to do.

I mean I keep my lows to myself sometimes.  If I know I am in a situation where I have it under control.  But going to the fridge at my house and getting a juice box rings the low alarm with my wife.  But when I have them with work partner when I am doing alot of talking or on a long phone call I just let them know.  I think it is good too because if they felt I was acting or talking different maybe one day they might recognize a low or be able to help me in the future.

Caleb went through a period where it was low after low after low - it was the beginning of the summer when we all started to get a little more active.  I set a goal for myself to have nothing less than 70 for 7 days in a row.  I have yet to get beyond day 1.  It has gotten better, but when that sixty something pops up - oh curses!!

The 60s however are less frequent and at least the 40s and 50s we were seeing don't pop up too much either.

It's such a tough struggle to keep that tight control and I too feel like a low is something less newsworthy than a high.  Although I don't get hahas from the highs either.

At the end of the day though, I have truly come to believe the somewhat corny theory that all numbers are good if you use them to act.  It's hard not to blame myself for the out of range numbers, particularly when it's discovered from Caleb coming to tell me, "Mom, I feel low" and I can only imagine what misery he's experiencing.  But we act and try to do better next time knowing that even with our best efforts, we will still have the lows and highs.

Thanks for sharing gents!

Perfect day to post a "bad" day post.  So I did end up having a terrible day.  I started out great, then quickly went down hill.

I started off the day with a 150 bg (slightly high but i can live with that) I have a fiber one muffin bolused and 3 hours later 120, great!

Now heres where it went down hill.  Let me first explain, I have recently gone off the deep end and just going insulin crazy to cover anything I ate (i managed, a lot of lows, but for the most part not too bad) but I don't like that crazy way of doing things.  I have recently cut back about 50% on my carb intake and bolusing accordingly.   Well I guess today my 2 oclock i/c ratio must have been way offf (only thing I can think of).  So after having 2 turkey dogs and a few wheat thins with a starting bg of 120 two hours later I was 270!!!  I was mad!  So I corrected, checked for ketones (trace) Had a bunch of water.  Hour later 347!!!!!!! To make matters worse, we had plans to go out to dinner with my wifes parents!  So I toook a ton of insulin +50 temp basal and went to dinner.... I had a chicken caeser salad (much better than wings, and a burger and fries).  I bolused for the caeser.  About an hour went by since my last test and it was 300!! Now my night was offically ruined.... We then went to a play (of course all I'm thinking about is this 300 bg).  I had about 3 bottles of water and went to the mens room about 4 times!  Finally intermission, I check and drum roll......157!!!  Sigh of relief.  So I went back in finished the show.... Checked it again, 65... Now, some Itallian ices.... (didn't go crazy though)...

Currently, about 2 hours from then it is 145 and I plan to be up at 3am.... Sooo I changed my I/C ratio and had a rough night!

Good night!

Kenny,

I understand what you day has been like.  I've been there.  AWFUL.  It's like no matter what you do right there, is a wrong.  You post was like days I've had before.  So frustrating.  I am frustrated for you, it's like can't i just have my BGs right?  Those days are the hardest for me, draining to say the least.

I think the only thing you can do is say, tomorrow is another day...  Today was down the tubes...  and tomorrow is going to be different.  But coming from those highs we know tomorrow is hard too.

Good night my friend, I wish you the best.  Hopefully you can sleep throughthe night.  I wish you a 120 BG tomorrow...  let me know... real life

that is so frustrating, what's worse is when I have constant lows, and the only thing i can figure is that it's my basal's.

today I woke up with an amazing blood sugar if 114, but I had a headache, so i attributed that to the two teeny tiny pieces of chocolate that I ate while watching a movie, then got in the car to travel back home from two states away, well I tested my blood in the car and oh joy it's 242. realizing i forgot to bolus for the crackers I was munching on I did a corrective bolus, about two hours later it's 104 and I still had 2 units of insulin to go through (IOB). I knew my BG level would be somewhere between 50 and 45 at least so we pull into a restaurant and I check my blood I am 64. then bolus for my meal and off we go again. then we pulled over to another place to rest and get snacks, I decided I was hungry and got food and that was that. the last BG i took which was an hour ago was 91. does a dance. those are annoying days where the BG levels are high then low.

I get the high and the low frustration! I kept having lows all the time until 2 weeks ago and now I keep going high.  Nothing has changed, eating the same kinds of foods, same amount of exercise....So now I am tweaking the basals and I finally figured out where the problems are but my adjustments are not working.  So I can count on being high 3 hours after lunch and at 1am right now. You just keep tweaking and testing, it is all that you can do

just checking in.... 75 this morning... I guess all the corrections and temp basals caught up to me... Kind of don't mind the 75 after all the 300+'s...

Today is a new day,

and the headache I'm sure.  Good deal...

Well today I woke up with a blockage.  Super!  WIth a 220 BG.  So of course instead of switching that second I see if I can "push" the blockage thru... it allowed me to to keep my delivery.  But of course when I check my BG an hour later, Bingo- 231 ...  So now I have a new set in.    What else does the day bring?  Actually I fine with the day so far,  just happy I wasn't in that 330 range I get into sometimes with a blockage.

Not sure if the two are linked.  I haven't heard about loss of appetite and pumping being related that way.  I did some quick research online but found nothing.  However I did see loss of appetite being something you should tell your Doctor (like you did) because it could be a symptom of something else and make glucose hard to manage.

I would work with your endo. if it is way off.. But I think the best way to do it, is to eat and bolus. and check your bg two hours after.  Then adjust accrdingly...
