One of the big issues a diabetic faces when going to college, whether they go away or live at home, is the food issue.  There is so much junk food on campus and that makes it tough to eat foods that don't make your sugars go crazy!  I also lived at home when I went to college and my sugars did much better when I packed my own food and snacks to take with me instead of eating at the cafeteria.

Also keep an eye on how your sugars react if you are stressed.  Prior to a test I typically have low blood sugars.  So you will want to test regularly and see how your body is reacting.  Good luck with starting school! :D

Hi ...

I could not tell you what going into college is like being diabetic seeing as I have only been Dx a year and a few months ago. But I can tell you I have seen how emotion has a big impact on your BG (or they do for me) This could be Happy:D, Sad:(, Stress:dry: or  many more. Also do not be afrade to talk to your teachers let them know about it or a heads up. ... w0w lost track of time but I have some tips to help out that ill post in next 48hrs because today is brothers birthday and I have an endo apointment all in the same day :D.

Hi Shelly,

Make sure to test your BG before class.  Like Suzanne said, stress can cause BGs to drop or rise.  So I would make sure to have some type of sugar near by just in case.  I would alert your teachers as well.  Some classes I took wouldn't allow you to bring anyting in the class other then a pen on exam day.

The food at school is soooo hard to manage.  Plus keep in mind even if you are eating salad it might not be as good as you think.

Good Luck!

I agree with many of you, I have gone away from home to go to college and the food choices is pretty sad. it has only been recently that I have become really aware that food has a big effect on how I feel.

EMS Chief I would go to the web site of dexcom and your pump and pull the info from there if he still chooses not to let you have your Basic diabetes supplies then you can go to college admin and have them make it happen in your favor. I mean it would be amazing for you to get your BG numbers to match a test answer the night before! that is funny sorry. I mean Gosh is it math class? What are you heading back to college for might I ask? I am back in for EMS management and the yr left on my nursing which I am only planing on using if I do flight nurse other wise I am an in the field in your face kind of medic so hospital nursing would not work!

Oh my bad now back to your issue I have never been to school for classes other then medical except my core classes and after one little tiny low BG of 31 I got to have anything and everything I needed to ensure I was on top of my diabetes now in no way am I suggesting a low or a high but hey they come we get them so it was good and bad for me well that and my partner teaching EMT-I's in the next room lol. but maybe if you show him info on highs and lows and what could happen if you were to go without these tools then he could get the just of the reason as to why it is there. I hope it works out for you.

I am in college for Computer networking and management.  The exam is psychology and i guess he has had issues with students hiding answers in stuff for what his email said.  He granted me premission to have it with me he asked me to keep everything on vibrate and keep it out of site unless there is a problem.  I have to ready the owner manual on the dexcom because it is new to me and i am not sure if it vibrates.

Thanks

JT

EMS Chief, I am glad to see your professor allowed you to use your CGMS.  I was just helping out another 1HappyDiabetic member whos professor would not let her bring juice into class to treal lows.

There are many laws for students just like you who have diabetes.  Don't give up.  Your Diabetes comes first.  Your college health services and Dean of Student Affairs can help with problems you might have in class.

Best of luck!!!
